Pet Shipping from Canada to Switzerland

A Switzerland move follows the EU import sequence even though the country is not an EU member: the microchip first, then the rabies vaccination, then a 21-day wait, then the health certificate, endorsed by the CFIA and valid for 10 days.

Which route does a pet take into Switzerland?

The FSVO names three airports for a pet flying in with its owner, Basel, Geneva and Zurich, and two, Geneva and Zurich, for a pet sent from Canada as cargo on an air waybill. Flying with your pet out of Canada opens all three, while cargo narrows the choice to the two.

What are the entry requirements for pets going to Switzerland?

The short answer

The FSVO asks a pet from Canada to be chipped first, to have a rabies vaccination still in date, and to carry its supporting documents. The certificate is the EU model the FSVO publishes, completed by your veterinarian and endorsed by the CFIA, and the CFIA’s list of pet export pages, read 7 October 2026, has no separate page for Switzerland.

Which pets can enter Switzerland?

Switzerland does not allow cropped or docked dogs to be imported, and the rule follows the appearance of the dog rather than where the procedure was done, so a dog docked legally in Canada is still caught by it. There are three ways through, each arranged before you fly. The first is relocation, where the dog qualifies as household effects, is confirmed with customs in advance and cannot afterwards be sold, given away, advertised or exhibited.

The second is a short stay by an owner living abroad, on payment of a deposit at customs. The third is an amputation carried out for medical reasons, with the veterinary documentation to prove it. A naturally short tailed dog needs confirmation from the FSVO that it was not docked or cropped, filed at least three weeks before entry.

On landing, the pet goes through the red customs exit to be checked, and the FSVO refuses entry to an animal whose documents are missing, which is why the file is checked line by line before the flight.

What vet work and documents does a pet need for Switzerland?

Start with the microchip, ISO 11784 compliant or with a reader you supply, then the rabies vaccination; a first shot has to be 21 days old by arrival. The model certificate is valid for 10 days, counted from the CFIA’s endorsement until the check at the point of entry. You travel with the pet, or someone you authorize moves it within five days of you.

The Swiss rules come from the FSVO, on travelling with dogs, cats and ferrets, on docked tails and cropped ears and in its model certificate, and the CFIA endorses the certificate before departure.

Planning Timeline for Pet Shipping to Switzerland

Four to six weeks covers a straightforward move to Switzerland when the rabies vaccination is current, and about seven weeks when it has to be redone, because the 21-day wait starts again. Where a dog’s tail is short from birth, the FSVO needs its papers three weeks or more ahead of the landing. The certificate sets the last stretch, valid 10 days from the CFIA’s endorsement, so the CFIA appointment and the flight are booked as a pair.

Questions about moving a pet to Switzerland

Request a Quote

When is the best time to fly a pet from Canada to Switzerland?

Spring and autumn ask the least of the plan. Winter needs the most from Canada, because Air Canada restricts pets in the hold through the cold months and over the holidays, which our Air Canada pet policy guide lays out; in summer, a cooler flight time matters most for a snub-nosed breed.

How much does it cost to move a pet from Canada to Switzerland?

That comes down to how big your pet and its crate are, the airline, the time of year and how much of the move you book with us. Our cost page for Canada to Switzerland lists the government fees, and a quote gives the full figure.

How does Pet Travel Advisors handle a Canada-to-Switzerland move?

One coordinator owns the file, and you decide what to hand over: flights, the crate, the certificate with the CFIA appointment and the FSVO papers for a dog born with a short tail, check-in in Canada, and collection on arrival in Switzerland with the drive to your new home.
