Air Transat and Flair Pet Policies for Dogs and Cats

Air Transat and Flair both carry cats and dogs, in different ways. Air Transat’s pets and assistance dogs page, read September 24, 2026, offers a place in the cabin or in the checked baggage hold, and sends a larger kennel to Air Transat Cargo. Flair’s pets page, read September 16, 2026, covers the cabin only, on flights within Canada.

The two policies differ on the weight limit, the fee and where a pet may fly, so this guide takes each airline in turn and then compares them.

Can a pet fly in the cabin on Air Transat?

Yes, one cat or dog per passenger, in a soft-sided carrier under the seat. Air Transat’s pets page, read September 24, 2026, sets these conditions for the cabin:

  • The carrier and the animal together must weigh no more than 8 kg.
  • The carrier can be no larger than 43 cm long, 24 cm wide and 25 cm high, and it must be soft-sided, leak-proof and well ventilated. Air Transat does not accept a hard-sided carrier or any other kind of bag.
  • Your pet needs room to stand, turn and lie down, no part of it may extend outside, and it stays in the carrier under the seat for the whole flight.
  • The carrier counts as your carry-on item, and Air Transat allows no other one alongside the pet.
  • A pet must be at least 12 weeks old and fully weaned. For flights to the United States the minimum age is 6 months, and for Guyana it is 4.
  • A passenger with a pet cannot sit in Club Class, an emergency exit row or a bulkhead seat, and unaccompanied minors and passengers travelling with medical equipment cannot bring an animal into the cabin.

Air Transat also says the number of pets on board is limited and only certain seats can take them, and that someone travelling with a pet may be moved to make a buffer zone if another passenger is allergic to dogs or cats. The cabin service is not available on codeshare flights or with vacation packages.

Can a pet travel in the hold on Air Transat?

Yes, cats and dogs travel as checked baggage in a rigid plastic kennel. Air Transat’s pets page, read September 24, 2026, sets these conditions for the hold:

  • The kennel must be rigid, leak-proof plastic. Wire or any other material is refused, though “a wire door is acceptable”, and a kennel with an opening in its roof is not accepted.
  • Kennel and animal together may weigh up to 45 kg, and the maximum size is 122 by 81.3 by 89 cm (48 by 32 by 35 inches). A bigger kennel goes through Air Transat Cargo, arranged in advance.
  • One animal per kennel, and none under 12 weeks old.
  • Wheels come off before check-in, and every door must lock. Air Transat fastens cable ties to the kennel at no charge, and if the door and sides cannot be secured with them, the animal is denied boarding.
  • Air Transat says the hold service “is not available on connecting or codeshare flights, on flights operated by another carrier, or for vacation packages.”

The cable ties stay on until you have left the baggage hall, and Air Transat recommends packing a cutting tool in a checked bag, since security rules stop its ground staff from lending one. Our guide to airline crate requirements in Canada covers how a kennel is sized and built.

Which dogs will Air Transat not carry?

Air Transat’s pets page, read September 24, 2026, lists dogs it is unable to transport, mixes of any of them included:

  • every mastiff breed, among them the Dogo Argentino, Bandog, Boerboel, Fila Brasileiro, Cane Corso, Neapolitan Mastiff, Presa Canario and Tosa Inu
  • every pit bull breed, among them the American Bully, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier
  • the Akita, Caucasian Ovcharka, Kangal or Anatolian Shepherd, Rottweiler, Doberman Pinscher and wolf-dog hybrids

French and American Bulldogs are on the hold list and not on the cabin one. Both lists exempt the Bull Mastiff and the French Mastiff, or Dogue de Bordeaux.

Other snub-nosed dogs and cats can go in the hold on three conditions Air Transat sets: a signed Acknowledgment and Exclusion of Liability handed to the check-in agent, a kennel one size larger than the normal standard, and ventilation openings on all four sides. Our guide to breed restrictions in pet shipping covers the wider rules.

What does Air Transat charge for a pet?

Air Transat charges per pet, per flight segment, and the fee depends on where you fly. Its pets page, read September 24, 2026 with the site set to English and Canadian dollars, lists these fees by the regions it names:

  • Within Canada: $50 in the cabin, $100 in the hold.
  • USA: $50 in the cabin, $150 in the hold.
  • South: $100 in the cabin, $275 in the hold.
  • Europe and Africa: $100 in the cabin, $275 in the hold.

The fee is paid when the space is booked. Changes to the pet’s itinerary are accepted without penalty up to 3 days before departure. Cancellations are accepted up to 30 days before it. Service animals on duty fly in the cabin free.

How do you book a pet on Air Transat?

By reserving the pet’s space with Air Transat’s Contact Centre at least 24 hours before departure. Its pets page, read September 24, 2026, says an animal without a reservation is not accepted at the airport, and adds four requirements:

  • complete the mandatory Air Transat Pet Information Form once the space is reserved, and bring a printed or electronic copy
  • be at least 16 years old to travel with an animal
  • bring a valid health certificate stating the pet’s breed, and proof of rabies vaccination, to check-in
  • have the pet at the check-in counter no later than 2 hours before departure

Air Transat says paying for a place in the hold does not guarantee acceptance, because some flights are subject to loading restrictions.

It limits one-way trips into Canada: a cat or dog cannot be booked one way from Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guyana, Haiti, Morocco, Peru or Türkiye, and has to be on a round-trip booking reserved through the Contact Centre. On flights to the United States, it accepts no animal that has visited a high-risk country in the 6 months before entering. Our guide to flying a pet from Canada to the US covers the American entry rules.

Its notes for two destinations change the plan outright. For the United Kingdom, Air Transat says cats and dogs to and from the UK travel on its aircraft as cargo only, then adds that pets in the cabin and the hold are accepted on flights from Manchester and Glasgow and not from London. To Ireland, cats and dogs travel as cargo only. From Dublin they may be accepted in the cabin, the hold or as cargo. Our United Kingdom and Ireland guides cover each country’s own entry rules.

Can a pet fly on Flair?

In the cabin, on flights within Canada. Flair’s pets page, read September 16, 2026, offers pet travel on flights within Canada only, and says it does not currently transport pets in the cabin on United States or international flights, emotional support animals included. It sets these conditions:

  • cats and dogs at least 12 weeks old, fully weaned, and toilet or litter trained
  • one pet per adult, added to the reservation at least 48 hours before departure
  • a soft-sided kennel, leak-proof and ventilated, no larger than 41 by 23 by 25 cm, and no heavier than 23 lb with the pet inside
  • no seat in an exit or bulkhead row, and no pet with an unaccompanied minor or with a passenger whose medical device has to be stowed under the seat
  • an infant and a pet travelling together each need their own adult, seated in different rows

Flair’s pets page, read September 16, 2026, gives the fee as $79 to $129 and does not say what sets the amount within that range. Flair may refuse a pet that is not under its handler’s control or behaves disruptively, and it may charge for repairing damage a dog causes, including any mess.

The same page describes cabin travel only and says nothing about pets in the hold or as cargo. For a pet larger than its kennel limit, ask Flair directly, or plan the move on an airline that publishes a hold service, such as Air Transat above.

Air Transat and Flair compared

For a small pet in the cabin, the two limits differ more on weight than on size. Air Transat caps pet and carrier together at 8 kg, and Flair’s limit is 23 lb, about 10.4 kg. Flair’s kennel limit is smaller than Air Transat’s carrier size on two of its three measurements and equal on the third. Put your pet in its carrier on a scale and measure the outside, then check both against the airline’s own page before you book.

Air Transat asks for the pet’s space at least 24 hours before departure, and Flair for 48. On the pages read for this guide, only Air Transat offers pet travel outside Canada or a place in the hold.

Our Air Canada and WestJet pet policy guides cover the two larger Canadian carriers. Our guide to Canadian airline pet policies compares the main ones. The pet carrier size checker on our US site compares your pet’s measurements with the cabin limits Canadian and US airlines publish, these two among them.
