Planning a Pet Move from Canada to Sweden
Canada is on the EU’s Annex II list, which gives Canadian pet owners a significant advantage when relocating to Sweden. That classification waives two of the most time-consuming requirements in international pet travel: the rabies antibody titre test (FAVN/RNATT) and post-arrival quarantine. With the right sequencing of microchip, vaccination, and paperwork, your pet can be cleared for travel in as little as a few weeks.
The Canadian process differs from the American one in the endorsement step. Instead of USDA APHIS, your EU health certificate goes to the CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) for endorsement. Any licensed Canadian veterinarian can complete the certificate (there is no “accredited vet” requirement like in the US). The certificate is valid for 10 days to the EU border, then covers up to six months of onward EU travel.
Here is what we handle for a Canada to Sweden pet move:

Approved Routes and Entry into Sweden
The most important routing detail for a Canada to Sweden pet move is this: pets arriving from outside the EU can only enter Sweden through two airports. Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) and Gothenburg Landvetter (GOT) are the only approved entry points. Every other Swedish airport is closed to non-EU pet arrivals, which makes your flight selection critical.
From Toronto Pearson (YYZ), SAS offers the most direct routing to Stockholm Arlanda, with seasonal nonstop flights and year-round service connecting through Copenhagen (CPH). From Vancouver (YVR), the practical options are Lufthansa through Frankfurt (FRA) to ARN or GOT, and Icelandair through Reykjavik (KEF) to ARN. From Montreal (YUL), connections through Copenhagen, Frankfurt, or Amsterdam all reach Arlanda.
One routing scenario worth understanding: if your flight connects through an EU country (for example, Copenhagen or Frankfurt), your pet technically enters the EU at that first stop. EU customs clearance happens there, and the onward flight to Sweden is treated as an intra-EU movement. We structure the paperwork so it is valid at every border your pet crosses.
What are the entry requirements for pets going to Sweden?
The short answer
From Canada, the CFIA asks for a microchip meeting ISO standard 11784, or a reader the owner supplies, and a wait of at least 21 days after vaccination before the pet enters the EU.
Import Eligibility for Pets
Sweden follows the EU’s standard rules for non-commercial pet imports under Regulation (EU) 2026/131. Canada is on the EU’s Annex II list, so Canadian pets are exempt from the rabies antibody titre test (FAVN/RNATT) and from any quarantine requirement. This is the same classification that the United States holds.
Your pet needs an ISO 15-digit microchip in place before the rabies vaccination. Older tattoo identifiers applied before July 3, 2011 are technically accepted, but a microchip is the practical choice. After a primary rabies vaccination, 21 days must pass before your pet can enter Sweden. Booster vaccinations given within the previous dose’s validity period skip the waiting period entirely.
A detail worth knowing: Sweden does not require Echinococcus (tapeworm) treatment for arriving pets, even though the parasite exists in the country’s wild fox population. This is a meaningful difference from Finland and Norway, both of which require dogs to have a veterinarian-administered tapeworm treatment 24 to 120 hours before entry. If you are planning to continue beyond Sweden into those countries, the tapeworm step gets added to the departure sequence.
Wolf hybrids are prohibited in Sweden. This includes the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog and the Saarloos Wolfdog.
Before scheduling any vet steps or flights, we confirm Sweden’s current entry airports and your pet’s vaccination status. Request a quote to get a plan built around your travel date.
Health Preparation and Documentation
The health certificate for Sweden is the EU non-commercial movement certificate, the same form used for all EU pet travel. The CFIA pairs English with the official language of the EU country where the pet first arrives, so the Swedish version is the one to use when Sweden is where it lands.
In Canada, any licensed veterinarian can complete the certificate. There is no separate accreditation requirement for export certifications (unlike the US system). Once the vet signs it, the certificate goes to your nearest CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) office for endorsement. CFIA’s appointment page asks for the endorsement fee to be paid online no later than 3 days ahead of the appointment, and processing normally takes 1 to 3 business days.
The endorsed certificate is valid for 10 days from the date of issue to reach the EU border. After entry, it remains valid for up to six months of travel within the EU, and never past the rabies vaccination’s own validity. A new EU certificate format took effect on October 1, 2026. We use whichever form is current for your travel date.
Swedish Customs (Tullverket) requires a formal notification at least 24 hours before your pet arrives. This applies regardless of which approved airport you use and regardless of whether your pet is flying in-cabin or as cargo. We submit the notification, confirm it has been acknowledged, and carry the confirmation as part of the travel packet.

Planning Timeline for Pet Shipping to Sweden
Starting from scratch (no microchip, no rabies vaccination), allow 4 to 8 weeks. That gives time for the microchip appointment, the rabies vaccination, the 21-day wait, the health certificate, CFIA endorsement, and flight booking.
If your pet already has a current rabies vaccination given after the microchip was implanted, the process can move much faster. In that case, 2 to 3 weeks is realistic. The limiting factors become the 10-day health certificate validity window and CFIA processing time at your regional office.
Norway is filed on its own CFIA certificate, HA3152, and adds a tapeworm rule for dogs. See our Norway page.
Every Pet Travels Differently
Different destinations, different routes, different challenges.
A family relocating from Toronto with a large Labrador needs a cargo booking on an aircraft whose hold has temperature control. A single traveller from Montreal with a small cat needs an in-cabin spot on a connecting flight through Copenhagen. These are different plans with different costs and different timelines. We build each one from scratch.
Destination-Focused Planning
Sweden is an EU member state, but it restricts where non-EU pets can enter the country. Only Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) and Gothenburg Landvetter (GOT) accept pets arriving from outside the European Union. That single rule drives the entire flight plan for a Canada to Sweden move. We also file a mandatory 24-hour advance notification with Swedish Customs (Tullverket) before your pet arrives.
Smart Routing and Logistics
From Canada, SAS flies from Toronto Pearson (YYZ) to Stockholm with seasonal direct service and year-round connections through Copenhagen. From Vancouver (YVR), Lufthansa connects through Frankfurt to both ARN and GOT, and Icelandair offers routings through Reykjavik to Stockholm. We select the airline based on your pet's size, the season, and whether your pet is flying in-cabin or as cargo.
Personalized Support
One advisor stays with you throughout. They handle scheduling, document reviews, airline communication, the Tullverket customs notification, and arrival logistics so you can focus on the rest of your move.
Questions about moving a pet to Sweden
Request a QuoteHow much does pet relocation from Canada to Sweden cost?
The cost of a move depends on several things: your pet’s size and weight, which set the crate and cargo price, the airline and departure city, veterinary fees for the health certificate and any required tests, government endorsement and permit fees, and how much of the process you would like us to coordinate. Because those pieces change from one pet and route to the next, we quote the full journey up front, including government fees, so there are no surprises later. Tell us your pet and your destination and we will send a clear plan and a price.
What CFIA paperwork do I need for pet travel to Sweden?
You need the EU non-commercial movement certificate, which is the standard health certificate for pet travel to any EU country. Your licensed veterinarian completes the form within 10 days of departure, and the CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) endorses it. The fee is paid online, no later than 3 days ahead of the endorsement appointment, the agency’s booking page says. The certificate confirms your pet’s microchip number, rabies vaccination status, and general health. We prepare the paperwork checklist for your vet and coordinate the CFIA submission so the timing aligns with your travel date.
How do I notify Swedish Customs about my pet's arrival?
Swedish law requires a notification to Tullverket (Swedish Customs) at least 24 hours before a pet enters the country from outside the EU. The notification includes your pet’s microchip number, flight details, and arrival airport (either Stockholm Arlanda or Gothenburg Landvetter). We file this notification on your behalf and confirm receipt before your pet departs Canada.
Does Sweden have any breed restrictions?
Sweden prohibits wolf hybrids, specifically the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog and the Saarloos Wolfdog. There are no restrictions on commonly owned dog breeds such as pit bulls, Rottweilers, or German shepherds. Sweden does not maintain a dangerous dog breed list of the type used in some other European countries. If you are unsure whether your dog qualifies as a wolf hybrid, we can help confirm with the Swedish Board of Agriculture (Jordbruksverket) before you begin the process.
What's the fastest timeline for moving a pet from Canada to Sweden?
If your pet already has a current rabies vaccination that was given after the microchip was implanted, you can be ready in as little as 2 to 3 weeks. The health certificate, CFIA endorsement, and customs notification can all be completed in that window. If your pet needs a first rabies vaccination, add the 21-day EU waiting period, which stretches the timeline to 4 to 8 weeks depending on vet availability and CFIA processing at your regional office.
How does Pet Travel Advisors manage a Canada to Sweden relocation?
We start by reviewing your pet’s vaccination and microchip records to determine exactly where you are in the process. From there, we build a step-by-step plan: scheduling any needed vet visits, preparing the EU health certificate for your vet to complete, submitting it to CFIA for endorsement, booking a flight that arrives at an approved Swedish airport (ARN or GOT), filing the 24-hour customs notification with Tullverket, and coordinating pickup logistics on arrival day. One advisor manages everything and keeps you informed throughout. Request a quote to get started with a plan specific to your pet and timeline.
