Pet Shipping from Canada to Thailand
Entry is run by the DLD, Thailand’s Department of Livestock Development, whose airport Animal Quarantine Stations grant the import permit ahead of the flight and check the animal and its papers on landing. Its Suvarnabhumi requirements cover that airport, and Thailand’s Washington embassy names five more stations, at Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Krabi and Samui. Approved Routes and Entry into Thailand
Thailand separates a pet carried in by its owner from one shipped as air cargo. A hand-carried pet is inspected at Suvarnabhumi’s station next to baggage carousel 8, staffed around the clock. A pet sent as freight waits at the station in the cargo terminal, open on weekdays from 08:30 to 16:30, and the Washington embassy notes that owners can collect such pets only then, not on Saturdays, Sundays or Thai holidays, so the flight is chosen to land within them. Live animals are restricted goods under Thai Customs rules and carry duty. An owner who flies in with a pet presents it to Customs in the declaration channel and pays the duty and taxes due.
Entry Requirements and Documentation for Thailand
Import Eligibility for Pets
The DLD’s requirements and the embassy’s instructions deal with dogs, cats and rabbits. The embassy’s version states that no breed of dog is barred from import, while noting that airlines can set restrictions of their own. On landing, the station issues the Import Licence (R-7) and a Notice of Import Approval, form R-6. The licence holds good until the pet leaves the country. If a requirement is not met, or the microchip differs from the documents, the DLD may return the animal or hold it in an approved quarantine place, with the costs falling on the importer.
For a rabbit, the list is a rabies vaccination plus deworming no less than a week ahead of departure. Ready to start? Request a quote.
Health Preparation and Documentation
For a dog: rabies, distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus and leptospirosis vaccinations. For a cat: rabies and feline panleukopenia. The records must be in English and show the microchip number. The veterinarian signs them and adds a name and licence number. A first rabies shot counts only if the animal was 12 weeks or older when it was given. On the wait that follows, the sources part ways. The DLD’s Suvarnabhumi requirements have the shots done 21 days or more ahead of departure. The Washington embassy wants 21 days to go by between a first vaccination and the permit application, with no wait after a booster. A dog lacking a current leptospirosis shot, or still inside that wait, can show a negative result for it from a test in the 30 days before it flies. A rabies titre test appears in none of the Thai documents read on 25 September 2026. The emailed application carries form R1/1, a passport copy, the itinerary, a picture of the animal, and the vaccination and microchip records.
| Requirement | Thailand, from Canada |
|---|---|
| Microchip | Number shown on the vaccination records and the application, backed by an implant certificate |
| Rabies vaccination | At 12 weeks or older, then a 21 day wait the DLD and the embassy time differently |
| Rabies titre | Not among the requirements in the three Thai documents read |
| Other vaccinations | Dogs: distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus and leptospirosis. Cats: feline panleukopenia |
| Import permit | Granted by the quarantine station where the pet lands; send the application 60 to 7 days ahead |
| Health certificate | Original, with CFIA endorsement obtained while the pet is in Canada |
| Quarantine | Possible where a requirement is not met, at the importer’s cost |
These are the documents this checklist rests on. The DLD sets out its rules for animals landing at Suvarnabhumi Airport. Thailand’s Washington embassy has instructions for pets from the USA, revised 30 January 2025. The Ottawa embassy sends Canadian owners to Thai Customs’ guidance on travelling with animals. All four were read on 25 September 2026. On the Canadian side, the CFIA’s pet export page was read on 22 September 2026.
Planning Timeline for Pet Shipping to Thailand
Work back from the flight. Applying for the permit is possible from 60 days before departure until a week out, at 7. The Washington embassy suggests applying at the 30 day mark. For processing, that embassy allows five to seven business days in Thailand after a complete file, the DLD’s Suvarnabhumi requirements at least three. A permit lasts 60 days from issue. The export certificate comes after the permit: your veterinarian completes it, and the CFIA adds its endorsement at a scheduled appointment. On how long it stays valid, the DLD’s requirements ask for the original, endorsed and stamped by the government, and state no period, while the Washington embassy gives 10 days from endorsement for pets from the USA. Holding the CFIA appointment within 10 days of landing meets the stricter reading.

Every Pet Travels Differently
Different destinations, different routes, different challenges.
Destination-Focused Planning
A microchip number that differs between the papers and the animal is one of the grounds the DLD names for holding a pet, so it is compared across every record before the file goes in.
Smart Routing and Logistics
We help choose practical routes, travel windows, and handoff procedures so your pet’s trip is safer and more predictable.
Personalized Support
Pet Travel Advisors assigns a move coordinator who keeps you updated and checks details before travel so nothing important is missed.
Questions about moving a pet to Thailand
Request a QuoteWhich Canadian airports will my pet fly from to Thailand?
The airline, and whether the pet goes in the cabin or the hold, settles the Canadian departure airport, and the drive to it can be booked as a service on its own.
What does Canada require to send my pet to Thailand?
Thailand has no entry in the CFIA’s pet export certificate list as read on 22 September 2026. For a destination without one, the CFIA advises obtaining its current import requirements from its veterinary authority or embassy. The Canadian International Health Certificate can then be used where the destination sets no format of its own and its requirements can be met. Otherwise the local CFIA animal health office reviews them to see whether a certificate can be negotiated, a process the agency says can take several months. A licensed veterinarian fills in the certificate, and the CFIA endorses it while the animal is still in Canada.
What does Thailand require for a pet arriving from Canada?
Three things: an import permit granted by the quarantine station where the pet lands, the vaccinations listed on this page with a microchip record, and the original export certificate carrying the CFIA’s endorsement. The DLD’s Suvarnabhumi requirements have the permit obtained before departure; the Washington embassy also lets an owner travelling with the pet apply on arrival with every original ready, and warns that some airlines refuse boarding without it.
When is the best time to fly a pet from Canada to Thailand?
Canadian winters are the main scheduling factor: airlines apply cold-weather limits, so we plan around the season and the forecast at both ends, choosing departure windows that keep your pet safe.
How much does it cost to move a pet from Canada to Thailand?
Every move is priced individually, because the route from Canada, airline fees, your pet’s size and crate, the season, and Thailand’s requirements all change the total. Tell us your city and timing and we’ll put together an estimate: request a quote.
How does Pet Travel Advisors handle a Canada-to-Thailand move?
Every service can be booked separately: the flights, a crate for travel, the permit request and the CFIA export paperwork, airport check-in in Canada, and collection when the pet lands in Thailand with delivery onward. Door-to-door is one option; using only the parts a move needs is another.
