Pet Relocation from Montreal

Pet transportation in Montreal requires careful coordination due to international travel demand and the city’s role as a major air hub. In addition, winter weather, peak travel seasons, and airport congestion can affect timing.

How a Move from Montreal Works

A Montreal move can use as much or as little of our pet relocation services as you want, from one airline booking to the whole trip from your front door.

  • Flights and check-in

We book your pet’s flights from Montreal-Trudeau (YUL), set the dates around the weather, the season and each airline’s rules for pets, and handle the check-in with the airline on travel day.

  • Door to door, when you book it

Door-to-door pet transport adds the road legs. A partner driver collects your pet from home, anywhere within roughly one to two hours’ drive of Montreal, and handles the check-in personally, and we meet your pet at the arrival airport.

  • Paperwork for a move abroad

For a move abroad, CFIA endorses the export certificate before your pet leaves Canada. CFIA’s appointment page, read 22 September 2026, says the endorsement is booked by appointment through a local CFIA office, with no walk-ins, and that the fee is paid online at least 3 days before the appointment. We prepare the certificate with you and your veterinarian, including an import permit where the destination country asks for one, and check each document against the destination’s rules. Our destination guides set out each country’s requirements.

Moving a Pet to Montreal

Moving here from another country? A pet entering Canada must meet CFIA’s import rules, and our guide to bringing a pet to Canada explains them. Once you live in Montreal, the Ville de Montréal’s pet page, read 23 September 2026, says every cat and dog there needs a licence and a tag, renewed each year, even one that never goes outside.

Flying a Pet Out of Montreal

Montréal–Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport is located in Dorval, about 20 minutes from downtown Montreal. As one of Canada’s primary international gateways, YUL offers extensive domestic, U.S., and overseas routes, making it a common departure point for international pet relocation.

Pet Travel Advisors plans routes, airline selection, and documentation timelines around this hub to reduce transfers, manage seasonal restrictions, and support smoother travel for pets.

Airline Pet Policy Guides

Air Canada publishes its own rules for animals. Our guide sets out what it says:

What to Expect When Shipping a Pet Through Montreal-Trudeau Airport (YUL)

  • Who actually handles your pet at YUL

Air Canada Cargo runs the AC Animals product out of Cargo North Sector, 2200 Reverchon, Dorval. The station runs every day, 05:00 to midnight. Montreal-Trudeau is a practical long-haul gateway, particularly for European routes. The tender window is narrow: an animal must be tendered no later than three hours before departure and no earlier than four, so it is a one-hour slot rather than a morning.

Air Canada Cargo’s before you book page, read 15 September 2026, says door-to-door service is not available for animals, so somebody has to take the crate to the counter and somebody has to collect it. Bookings inside Canada go direct to Air Canada at least 24 hours ahead; bookings to the United States or overseas have to be placed through a registered IPATA, IATA or ATA agent rather than by the owner. We book the CFIA endorsement appointment against the flight rather than the move date.

  • Animal Reception Services

YUL has animal reception services through some airlines and third-party pet relocation services, specializing in customs clearance, handling, and kennelling for pets travelling internationally.

  • Pet Relief Areas

There are indoor and outdoor pet relief areas for pets before and after flights, making it more convenient for pets to take a break.

Questions about moving a pet to or from Montreal

Frequently Asked Questions

What season is best for a pet move from Montreal?

Montreal sees cold winters and warm summers, so timing matters at both ends of the year. Airlines set temperature limits for animals in cargo in extreme cold and extreme heat, and we plan your Montreal move around the forecast, picking the safest departure window from Trudeau and adjusting routing when the weather does not cooperate.

Do you help with crates and carriers for Montreal pets?

Yes. The crate is one of the most important parts of a safe flight, so we size it to your pet and to the airline’s rules, which set the dimensions, ventilation, and labelling a carrier will accept. For Montreal pets we confirm the crate well before travel so there are no surprises at Trudeau.

Will my pet have layovers flying from Montreal?

Where we can, we plan Montreal moves with the fewest connections, because a direct flight is shorter and calmer for your pet. When a layover is unavoidable, we choose connections with enough time and the right conditions, routing through Trudeau or a larger hub to keep the total trip as short as possible.

How do you price a pet move from Montreal?

Every Montreal move is priced on its own, because the route, airline fees, your pet’s size and crate, the season, and the destination’s rules all change the total. Tell us where and when, and we’ll put together an estimate: request a quote. For a closer look at what drives the price, see our guide to pet shipping costs in Canada.
