Pet Relocation from Ottawa
Ottawa’s winter cold, summer heat, and peak-hour congestion can affect routing and timing, so planning ahead helps align flights and documentation while reducing the risk of last-minute delays.
How a Move from Ottawa Works
Choose which of our pet relocation services an Ottawa move uses: the flights out of YOW on their own, or pickup at home through to the arrival airport.
Flights and check-in
We book your pet’s flights from Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier (YOW), set the dates around the weather, the season and each airline’s rules for pets, and handle the check-in with the airline on travel day.
Door to door, when you book it
Door-to-door pet transport adds the road legs. A partner driver collects your pet from home, anywhere within roughly one to two hours’ drive of Ottawa, and handles the check-in personally, and we meet your pet at the arrival airport.
Paperwork for a move abroad
For a move abroad, CFIA endorses the export certificate before your pet leaves Canada. CFIA’s appointment page, read 22 September 2026, says the endorsement is booked by appointment through a local CFIA office, with no walk-ins, and that the fee is paid online at least 3 days before the appointment. We prepare the certificate with you and your veterinarian, including an import permit where the destination country asks for one, and check each document against the destination’s rules. Our destination guides set out each country’s requirements.
Arriving
Moving a Pet to Ottawa
Relocating to Ottawa from outside Canada? Start with CFIA’s import rules; our guide to bringing a pet to Canada covers each one. After you settle in, the City of Ottawa’s cat and dog registration page, read 23 September 2026, says the City requires cat and dog owners to register their pets and renew the registration every year, and that the numbered metal tag it issues must be worn on the collar or harness, particularly outside the home.
How the service works from start to finish is on our pet transport services page.
Flying a Pet Out of Ottawa
Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport (YOW) Location: Approximately 10 km (6 miles) south of downtown Ottawa, Ontario. For more complex international itineraries, travellers may need to connect through larger Canadian hubs like Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) or Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL).
Airline Pet Policy Guides
Air Canada publishes its own rules for animals. Our guide sets out what it says:
Air Canada: cabin, baggage and cargo rules.

We plan air routes based on airline availability, seasonal restrictions, and your pet’s specific needs, including crate and documentation requirements.

Ground Pet Transport
Ground transport options support shorter routes or airport connections, with timing planned around traffic patterns and border considerations when applicable.

International Pet Transport
International moves from Ottawa require precise documentation sequencing and airline coordination. We plan timelines that align with destination import rules and veterinary requirements.

Door to Door Relocation
Door to door relocation combines ground and air planning, coordinating pickup, airport handling, and arrival timing to keep the process organized and predictable.
Types of Pets We Transport
We handle a wide range of pets, offering customized solutions for each type of animal.

Dog Transportation
Dog transportation from Ottawa requires careful planning around airline size limits, seasonal temperature policies, and flight availability. We plan routing and timing based on your dog’s breed, crate size, and destination requirements.

Cat Transportation
Cats often travel well when their itinerary is planned carefully and documentation aligns with airline rules. We coordinate airline options and timing to reduce unnecessary transfers and long layovers.

Bird Transportation
Bird transport involves airline-specific policies, specialized containers, and destination permits. We plan routes from Ottawa that align with carrier acceptance rules and required documentation.

Small Mammals Transportation
Small mammals such as rabbits or guinea pigs may face limited airline options. We coordinate routing and review carrier and destination rules to determine the safest and most practical travel method.

Reptile and Exotic Pet Transport
Reptiles and exotic pets often require permits and strict temperature considerations. We plan transport carefully, factoring in airline acceptance, climate control, and regulatory requirements.
Service Areas Near Ottawa

Assuming all airlines at YOW accept pets the same way
Booking flights before veterinary documents are finalized
Overlooking weather-related airline restrictions

What to Expect When Shipping a Pet Through Ottawa Airport (YOW)
Who actually handles your pet at YOW
Air Canada Cargo runs the AC Animals product out of 900 Airport Parkway Private. The counter runs every day, 07:00 to 17:40, with the warehouse open slightly longer, 06:20 to 19:00. The tender window is narrow: an animal must be tendered no later than three hours before departure and no earlier than four, so it is a one-hour slot rather than a morning.
Air Canada Cargo’s before you book page, read 15 September 2026, says door-to-door service is not available for animals, so somebody has to take the crate to the counter and somebody has to collect it. Bookings inside Canada go direct to Air Canada at least 24 hours ahead; bookings to the United States or overseas have to be placed through a registered IPATA, IATA or ATA agent rather than by the owner. We book the CFIA endorsement appointment against the flight rather than the move date.
Temperature limits and ground handling
Airlines decide whether a pet flies, not the airport. Carriers refuse an animal in the hold when forecast ground temperatures fall outside their published limits, and they layer seasonal embargoes on top of that. Air Canada Cargo also requires a comfort stop when a connection runs longer than 6 hours, or when an animal is not collected within 4 hours of arrival: the animal goes to a kennel or a veterinary service and those fees fall to the shipper. Between drop-off and loading your pet waits in the cargo handler building rather than a dedicated animal terminal, so the acceptance window and the handler opening hours are what a travel date has to be built around.
Pet Relief Areas
Outdoor Relief Areas: YOW has designated outdoor pet relief areas near the terminal entrances. These areas are equipped with waste disposal stations and provide space for pets to relieve themselves before check-in or after arrival.
Questions about moving a pet to or from Ottawa
Request a QuoteFrequently Asked Questions
How does Ottawa’s winter cold affect pet travel?
Winter is the main scheduling factor for Ottawa moves. When temperatures drop, airlines apply cold-weather limits and may hold animals from cargo on the coldest days. We plan around it by choosing milder travel windows and midday departures from YOW, and by routing through warmer connections when the forecast calls for it, so your pet travels safely.
What paperwork does a pet need to fly from Ottawa?
Pet travel runs on health paperwork. For a move within Canada a health certificate from a licensed veterinarian is usually enough; for international moves the destination sets the requirements and the export certificate must be endorsed by the CFIA, often on a strict timeline. We map the vet visits and CFIA steps for your Ottawa move so nothing expires at the wrong moment.
What kinds of pets do you relocate from Ottawa?
We coordinate travel for dogs, cats, birds, small mammals, and select reptiles or exotics from Ottawa, whenever airline and destination rules allow. Each species has its own requirements, and snub-nosed breeds and older pets get extra planning around routing and the weather.
What does pet transportation from Ottawa cost?
Every Ottawa move is priced on its own, because the route, airline fees, your pet’s size and crate, the season, and the destination’s rules all change the total. Tell us where and when, and we’ll put together an estimate: request a quote. For a closer look at what drives the price, see our guide to pet shipping costs in Canada.
